Steritech X-ray facility approved to irradiate fruit for Vietnam
Steritech’s Melbourne X-Ray facility opened in early 2020 and promptly started treating fresh fruit for phytosanitary purpose before exporting them to international markets such as New Zealand and Indonesia. It has also been used to facilitate interstate trade in the domestic market.
At the end of January 2021, the Vietnamese authorities have conditionally approved the facility to treat Australian table grapes and cherries bound for Vietnam.
The move is seen as a major boost for growers and exporters in southern parts of Australia as this will improve trade efficiency. Previously they had to send their fruit to Brisbane to have them irradiated before shipping them to Vietnam.
